A colleague, Mark Taylor, mentioned to me at Umbrella last week that CILIP was to have a virtual office on Second Life and the details have now been confirmed...

CILIP will have a virtual office on Second Life from 12pm on Thursday 19 July.

Apparently it's a developing piece of work, but it could provide a new platform to share information, network and publicise the benefits, activities, events, products, services etc. that CILIP offers.

There are two more excellent reviews of recent Facet books in the June 2007 issue of Informati on World Review.

In brief, the first applauds Digital Preservation as a 'wise and witty take on digital preservation' and the second refers to Essential Thesaurus Construction as 'All in all, a commendable book'.

Internet World 2007

I popped along to Internet World this morning and went to a couple of seminars. The first one, which was absolutely packed, I went to was called 'Social Networking - Is there space for the marketer in the user controlled environment?' It was presented by Caroline Vogt, Head of International Research EMEA & Americas, MSN and she looked primarily at the way big Brands create online communities (blogs etc) to drive interest in their products. It was very interesting and I particularly liked her handy tips (which I think are applicable to anyone blogging) for marketing in a Web 2.0 world where 'conversation is king'.

3. prove your individuality

4. be conscious of your audience

5. update regularly

I just have to try and stick to them now...

Just spotted, in the latest edition of FreePint, an excellent review of Alison Jane Pickard's, Research Methods in Information.

This book successfully covers the key angles, themes and topics that you would expect and hope to see in a research text for people working or researching in information environments. It is an ideal size, accessible and nice to read. The author's enthusiasm for and knowledge of research is evident, not only by her credentials but by the very nature of the book itself. I am certainly pleased to have it in my collection.

Last week I went to a focus group held by the Publishing Training Centre at Bookhouse. The event was held at the Publishers Association and was very interesting. The aim of the focus group was to try and understand further what training requirements we marketing people had and to get our views on what new areas are developing, what new skills we need to do our jobs more effectively etc. All four of us marketing people (working in very different publishing environments I'm sure) talked excitedly about the Web 2.0 phenomenon, blogging, podcasts, etc and how new technology is helping us to develop relationships further with our customers and to create more useful products.

While the Publishing Training Centre does already have a course on Marketing Using the Internet (from looking at the course details) it doesn't seem to mention blogging directly. I'm sure this will change shortly if the enthusiasm of us marketing people is any indication...
