John Bowman (author of Essential Cataloguing and Essential Dewey) is recipient of The Library History Award for the year's best essay on library history. Sponsored by Emerald and awarded by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals it aims to improve the quality and quantity of writing on library history in the British Isles. Dr. Bowman's prize winning essay: ‘Classification in British public libraries: a historical perspective’, Library History 21 no. 3 (2005), pp. 143-73.
